Gilgamesj (founded in 1975 in Leerdam, Holland) is one of the oldest Dutch hardrockbands. After 35 years the band is still playing.

The MK1 line-up played their last concert in 1995. 3 ex-bandmembers (Frank van Stijn, Gerrie den Hartog and Rene Sterk) decided that there was so much retro-material available from those 20 years that it was worth sharing it with the old fans and...well, with everybody interested.

They started a new band in 1999, that band was called Zixth Zense. But everywhere this band preformed the fans always kept asking for some classic Gilgamesj-songs. In the end Zixth Zense played a lot of old Gilgamesj songs and even performed a couple of times under the name of Gilgamesj.

After the last - very succesfull - gig in october 2008 in Hoorn (HMM-festival) Zixth Zense fell apart. The original Gilgamesj members decided to continue under the name of Gilgamesj with a new drummer, Walter Beijen.
And so, 15 years after the final concert of the MK1 line-up in the Jungle, there is a Gilgamesj MK2. A band with a rich heritage and a busy future. The band is working on new material now, and hope to launch a new album in 2011 as a worthy follow-up of the classic "Take One" EP from 1984.

Gilgamesj (opgericht in 1975 in Leerdam) is een van de oudste hardrockbands in Nederland. 35 jaar na de oprichting is de band nog steeds muzikaal actief.

In 1995 stopte de MK1 bezetting. 3 ex-bandleden (Frank van Stijn, Gerrie den Hartog en Rene Sterk) kwamen tot de conclusie dat er nog zoveel materiaal beschikbaar was uit die eerste 20 jaar dat het de moeite waard was om dat te delen met de oude fans en...wel, met iedereen die interesse heeft.

Uit Gilgamesj ontstond in 1999 een nieuwe band, Zixth Zense genaamd. Maar overal waar Zixth Zense speelde vroegen de fans altijd om het oude Gilgamesj-repertoire.

Dit fenomeen bleef de band achtervolgen zodat er op verzoek een aantal malen onder de oude naam Gilgamesj werd gespeeld. Na een - zeer succesvol - optreden in oktober 2008 (Hoorn - HMM festival) werd besloten gewoon weer als Gilgamesj door te gaan.

15 jaar na het afscheidsconcert van de oude MK1 bezetting is er nu dus een Gilgamesj MK2. Een band met een rijk verleden (zie de archieven op deze site) en met een drukke toekomst.

Naast nieuw materiaal, waaraan op dit moment wordt gewerkt, zullen ook enkele oude klassiekers op de setlist blijven. En in 2011 willen we dan eindelijk een waardige opvolger presenteren van de succesvolle Take One EP uit 1984.
